Dear parents and carers,
As the festive season approaches, we know that everyone is ready for a well deserved break and some time with loved ones. As much as there can be joy and happiness this time of year, there can also be challenges and things that can pose a risk to safety.
1. Online safety
Lots of children may be lucky enough to have new phones, tablet or computers for Christmas, and for others they may have some more time on their hands where they are using their phones.
• Monitor screen time and online activity: Encourage open conversations about what children are doing online. If they are getting new technology, lock it down and make sure that there are safeguards on there to ensure there is a safety net whilst they are online.
• Check privacy settings: Make sure social media accounts are secure and personal information isn’t shared publicly.
• Beware of scams and strangers: Remind children never to share personal details or engage with unknown contacts.
- Online footprint- have open conversations around online behaviour. If it online or sent to another person, this information could be shared widespread. Be kind online!
2. Staying Connected
• Keep communication open: Children should know who they can talk to if they feel worried or unsafe.
• Share emergency contacts: Make sure your child knows how to reach you and trusted adults.
3. Safe Celebrations
• Supervise gatherings: Ensure children are supervised during parties and events.
• Alcohol awareness: If alcohol is present, keep it out of reach of young people.
• Drink driving: rates of drink driving go up at this time of year, remind kids of road safety awareness when they are out and about.
• Enjoy responsibly
4. Mental Wellbeing
• Holidays can be stressful. Encourage children to talk about their feelings and seek support if needed.
• Look out for signs of anxiety or withdrawal and offer reassurance.
5. If You’re Concerned
• If you believe a child is at risk, contact your local safeguarding team or emergency services immediately.
• Useful numbers:
o Childline: 0800 1111
o NSPCC: 0808 800 5000
o Families first plymouth: 01752 668000
• If there is immediate risk to safety, call 999.
Wishing everyone a safe and happy holiday season, and we look forward to welcoming the children back on January 6th.
