The role of assessment is critical to the curriculum design and enactment process, and only through assessment will we really know the strength and quality of curriculum, and its delivery. Our assessments enable us to make changes to the curriculum we have designed and how it is enacted.

 

When developing assessments, we ensure that we ask four key questions (these are known as the four pillars):

• What is the purpose of the assessment? What are we measuring and why are we measuring it?

• Is the assessment valid, does it test what it intends to measure? Does it provide information which is both valuable and appropriate for the intended purpose.

• Is the assessment reliable? Does it ask precise questions, What can we infer from the information gained?

• Does the assessment add value? Is it a worthwhile exercise for all stakeholders involved.
