Hearing Support

Your Hearing Support Centre

Eggbuckland Hearing Support Centre (HSC) is a specialist place in the school where students who are deaf or have a hearing loss can get advice and support.

Where are we?

We occupy four small rooms upstairs from the Compass.  The HSC is open for anyone to drop in during school hours. We have one specialist Teacher of the Deaf, two Communication Support Workers and nine Teaching Assistants.

Moving Schools

For new students, moving from another school can be daunting!  We offer an enhanced transition to new students, tailored to your needs.  This may include multiple visits to the college, time with your new key worker, visual aids (maps, timetables), meetings with your parents/carers,  teachers and adults who know you well.

Who do we help?

For deaf students with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), we have a team of specialist staff who can help you to access lessons and school work.  How we support depends on what you need.

If you use a hearing aid or have hearing loss but no EHCP, we can still support you with advice, technical help, support in meetings and helping teachers to understand your needs.  Please let us know if you have needs relating to hearing and communication.

What do we do?

EHCP students will have a key worker to help navigate lessons and school work.  Some students have a Teaching Assistant to take notes for them, some may require British Sign Language and have an interpreter or Communication Support Worker.  Some students need help with understanding and learning the language used in lessons.  You may have some lessons in the quiet environment of the HSC to reinforce your learning.

We can help with social (friends and relationships) and emotional (how you feel about things) needs.

You can learn BSL with us, at our weekly club.  Some deaf students also study for a qualification in BSL.

We provide and maintain sound field systems in every classroom, personal assistive listening devices (radio aids) where appropriate and are able to help with maintenance of hearing aids and cochlear implants.

We provide deaf awareness training to staff and students across the school.
