Geography - Year 9

Week Beginning - 13th July

What I will be learning about -

UK River Landscapes – Review

What I will need to know or be able to do by the end of the week

Aim – To recap the last 12 weeks of Online Learning.

Using your notes and any other revision materials that you have, answer the questions shown on the slides.

If you get stuck, revisit some of the previous lessons to help you. Use GCSE pod as a visual way of reminding you of the processes, landforms and management that occurs on rivers in the UK.

Treat each slide as one session (50-60 minutes) and work through as many of the questions as you can. Some are easier than others!

You can use the Week 13 Student Sheet to record your answers if you wish to.

Remember to submit your work to your class teacher via email.

Week Beginning - 22nd June

What I will be learning about - Managing floods at Banbury and the UK floods of 2007.

What I will need to know or be able to do by the end of the week

Banbury is a town located north of Oxford in the Cotswold Hills and has a history of flooding due to its proximity to the River Cherwell. Much of the town is built on the floodplain of this river that eventually flows into the River Thames.

Aim – You work this week consists of three aims:

  • To know why a flood management scheme was needed in Banbury

  • To know what the scheme consists of

To know what the costs and benefits of the scheme are

What I will need to know or be able to do by the end of the week

Different management strategies can be used to protect river landscapes from the effects of flooding.

Hard engineering involves building artificial structures which try to control rivers. They tend to be more expensive. Each hard engineering strategy has its advantages and disadvantages.
